2-1 vs Juniors On February 7th -15th 2010 the Florida Eels and Edison Prep School went on its 6th annual College Tour. On this forum we take the players to a 13 day journey to the New England area colleges and universities so players can visit various college campuses, meet with the admissions offices, tour the class rooms, financial aid offices, the dorms, meet with students, professors and administrators.
Moreover, the boys get to meet with members of the hockey teams and the ice hockey coaches. Indeed, this visit gives the players a first had view of a number of schools and helps them make an evaluation of what college they might want to attend. The players also get to attend a number of the college practices and games so the players can more accurately reflect on whether they have he skill level to play for that division – NCAA Div 1, Division 3 or ACHA Div 1, 2 or 3.
We visited:
Bridgewater State College
University of New Hampshire
Norwich University
Becker College
Worcester State College
Sacred Heart College
Northeastern University
University of Maine
University of Massachusetts Boston
University of Massachusetts Lowell
Framingham State College
Southern New Hampshire University
Franklin Pierce College
Suffolk University
Highlights of the week were watching Boston College vs. U Mass Lowell at the Tsongas Arena. This was so exciting. The previous week 8 of the Eels All Star players also got to attend the BC vs. Providence game. We got to see former alumni of the Florida Eels – Malcolm Lyles play for Boston College! The players also got to watch Worcester State College vs. Framingham State College and Becker College vs. Wentworth College battle it out in league play. These events provided the boys with a snap shot view of what Div 1 and Div 3 college games are like and to make assessments and evaluations against their own skills.
This is a pretty intense week with the goal of seeing about a dozen schools over all. In addition to touring the schools the boys get to scrimmage several College ACHA teams (Norwich University, Sacred Heart, University of Maine and Bridgewater State college). Probably the most exciting part of the scrimmages against the college teams was playing at Maine where there were approximately 1,000 fans in the stands watching our game. The crowd was great and it was really exhilarating playing in that environment. Against the ACHA teams the Eels 4-0.
The Eels MJHL B squad also played against a number of Junior B teams: at the MJHL Showcase in Walpole Massachusetts: The Washington Little Caps, The Valley Forge Minute Men and the New Jersey Rockets. In that showcase the Eels went 2-1
At the various games the area New England college coaches got to also see our players first hand show off their talents and skills This is a phenomenal event for all of the boys who play on the Eels, whether as juniors, Edison Prep School, or for our for midgets. Our Players often participate 2-3 years on this tour as they can garner so much information to help them make an intelligent and informed decision about their future college plans
